Fairmont Jr. Peguins Swim Team

The Fairmont Jr. Penguins is the Salt Lake County Recreational Swim League team at Fairmont Aquatic Center. The team practices year-round. Jr. Penguins participate in the Salt Lake County Recreational Swim League and have a proud history of being one of the best teams in the league.

The swim league holds meets almost every month of the year (with the exception of May and September). These meets are held on one Saturday each month (usually the 3rd Saturday) at various pools around the Salt Lake valley. The events are geared toward the age and ability of the swimmers (25 yards or 50 yards of each stroke).

The practices and meets are fun and a great way to learn about competitive swimming. Practices are an hour long and are designed to teach the competitive strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly) and starts and turns. Most practices will start with a warm-up and end with a cool down and include kicking, swimming, pulling, drills and games or activities that reinforce the strokes or other techniques for competitive swimming.

Participants must have a minimum level of ability to swim on the Jr. Penguins. (See Registration information below.)

Age: Ages 5-15

Swimmers are broken into lanes by swimming ability rather than age for space and practice purposes.

Fee:

The Fees for the Jr. Penguins are as follows:

Monthly:

  • 1 Day a Week     $25
  • 2 Days a Week    $35
  • 3 Days a Week    $40
  • 4 Days a Week    $45

Multiple Months (one time payment, up to 4 days a week):

  • Sept-Dec           $110
  • February-May     $120

Registration:

Participants must have a minimum level of ability to swim on the Jr. Penguins.

The requirements for the Jr. Penguins Swim Team are:

  • 25-yard Freestyle (Front Crawl) in good form (one time across the lap pool)
  • 25-yard Backstroke (Back Crawl) in good form (one time across the lap pool)
  • The 25 yards of each stroke must be completed without stopping in the middle of the pool (they may stop at the end between the 2 strokes)
  • Pass a swim check of the above with the Jr. Penguins coach prior to joining

Good form as stated above means the stroke is recognizable. Also, they should be breathing to the side on freestyle, alternating the arm strokes on both freestyle and backstroke and mostly horizontal in the water. This is what should be done to pass level 4, but passing level 4 does not guarantee passing the swim check.

There will now be a 1-day trial/tryout for new participants of the Jr. Penguins to ensure the above requirements can be met before participants are allowed to join the Jr. Penguins Swim Team. Once the swim check as been completed, the participant needs to pay the registration fee at the front desk or online.
