Mayor Corroon and County Council Invest in Public Safety and New Ultra-Violet Light Systems for All Salt Lake County Swimming Pools.
Mayor Corroon and the Council unanimously approved the procurement and installation of ultra-violet light systems in all Salt Lake County Pools to help fight the spread of water-borne illnesses such as giardia and cryptosporidium.
During the summer of 2007 the Wasatch Front experienced a cryptosporidium outbreak of epidemic levels. The bacteria caused many to become ill and was spread through out the state. As a way to fight a future outbreak and to make Salt Lake County pools a safe place to swim, the ultraviolet light systems are being installed in County pools during 2008.
What is an Ultraviolet Light System? An ultraviolet light (UV) system is a environmentally friendly, non-chemical treatment for swimming pools and spas. 100% of pool water is passed through a chamber containing powerful ultraviolet light bulbs, instantly killing bacteria and parasites that are commonly found in swimming pools.
The UV light instantly neutralizes over 99.9% of bacteria and parasites such as cryptosporidium and giardia and breaks down organic and inorganic pollutants introduced in recreational water. The technology mimics energy of the sun in a concentrated chamber killing bacteria and parasites found in water with every filtration turnover.
